IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT THE VOLUNTARY INCOME TAX ASSISTANCE (VITA) PROGRAM
UWCJ is continuing to provide VITA services to prepare taxes for prior year, late filing and extensions. The October 15th deadline has been extended to January 3rd.
The process is different from prior years, so we want to let you know what you may expect and how to prepare for it.
To continue to keep everyone safe fhere will be no in-office tax preparation services. All taxes will be prepared remotely. Even though we will not have face-to-face preparation, we are making every effort to make sure you will still have contact with the volunteer preparing your taxes through video conferencing and/or phone.
We will be using a secure digital platform, Dropbox, so you can upload your documents using your computer, or even your phone! While we encourage as many people as possible to use this platform and we will help you use it, we know that not everyone has access to the technology needed to upload and send documents using digital platforms. For this reason, we are offering other tax preparation types as well (see below for more details). Using our digital platform and our other no-contact options will keep all of us safe and healthy.
Options for your tax preparation are:
• Drop off your documents at a lockbox location (no contact)
• Mail copies of your documents to us (no contact)
Attention: VITA at United Way of Central Jersey
32 Ford Avenue
Milltown, NJ 08828
• Curbside drop-off and pick up (by appointment only, limited contact)
As in the past you will be able to sign-up online and by telephone to have your taxes prepared virtually. Click here to make your appointment using our Acuity Scheduling site.
No matter how you submit your documents to us, a volunteer preparer will still prepare your taxes and returns will still be reviewed by our quality reviewer to ensure accuracy. If there are any questions during the preparation or quality review process, we will reach out to request additional or clarifying information. Your return will be prepared in a timely manner, and you will be kept informed of the status of your tax return through email, phone or text messages. You will receive a copy of the completed return which will be reviewed with you via video conference or phone with the volunteer preparer prior to e-file.
The IRS has postponed the start of tax preparation to February 12th. Tax appointment scheduling for both online and curbside drop off starts February 1st. Taxpayers with email addresses on file who utilized VITA through UWCJ last year will automatically receive a notification to schedule.
